The overall objective of AROMA3D is to develop the technological solutions to enable future 3D network (resulted from expanding the two-dimensional terrestrial network by adding another non-terrestrial dimension via the incorporation of non-terrestrial nodes) and develop a new innovative vision to ground future communications and contribute to the creation of the necessary ecosystem for its realization focusing on both the terrestrial and non-terrestrial segments.
To achieve this goal, AROMA3D will pursue the following specific objectives.
-
Define the 3D network main building blocks, identify a set of use cases, system requirements, and key technological enablers.
-
Design of air interface, antenna solutions and resource management techniques suited for the 3D network.
-
Enhance spectrum efficiency of the communication networks via the exploitation extremely large antenna apertures in combination with advanced signal processing and machine learning architectures and via enabling the utilization of wide frequency range (sub-6 GHz frequency bands, mmWave and THz bands).
-
Explore multi-access Edge computing and develop innovative approaches based on artificial intelligence for operation and optimization at all system levels.
-
Evaluate and validate the solutions by means of Proof-of-Concepts.
To address all the research challenges efficiently, the AROMA3D project is composed of 3 subprojects:
-
AROMA3D-Earth: targeting developing innovative emerging techniques to enhance the terrestrial segment of the 3D network.
-
AROMA3D-Space: targeting developing innovative emerging techniques to enhance the terrestrial segment of the 3D network.
-
AROMA3D-Hybrid: targeting developing innovative solution for the hybrid terrestrial and non-terrestrial systems.
